Author Interview:

What genres do you write in and why?

I write suspense and crime fiction, but not the gratuitous type. There are murders and murderers in my stories but I hope the plots are about much more than that. After working with vulnerable young women and hearing their stories, I really wanted to write something which reflected the really hard time a lot of girls have growing up and make people a little aware of what is going on.

What do you have published and where?

I started off in romantic fiction and worked for a book producer who turned out a number of paperback titles a month. But these were all very formulaic and I’m glad now that they don’t have my real name on them. Most people laugh at writers who do this but it teaches you how to structure a story well and quickly. I just started writing crime fiction now and am entirely self-published because the amount you get from a publisher as a new writer is so small that you can make the same without any of the hassle if you self-publish.

Are you a plotter (plots and outlines) or a pantzer (by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer)? Why?

I’m an avid plotter who allows the inner pantzer to hold the wheel now and again. I think if you don’t plot, then you have to get lucky to get your story to land well with all the elements woven together. There are genres that can accommodate pantzers better, such as erotic fiction, pulp fiction and special interest, but crime fiction tends to be really plot driven.

What is the best or worst writing advice you’ve ever received?

“You need to write a million words to learn to write well.” I thought this was nonsense when I first heard it but then realized with all the drafts and rewrites, I had written around a million words before I was happy with the stuff I was producing.
