“Enjoying him feeling you up?”

“Actually, yes, I’m loving his groping.” Leah smoothed the silky, see-through fabric away from her hip. “I especially like his hard-on that’s been pressed against me all evening.” She leaned close to Marc’s ear and whispered. “It’s getting me really wet."

His voice was uneven as he said, “I know that this is our first official date, but can I get a kiss?”

Her eyes widened, then narrowed as she studied his face. “I don’t know. I don’t want you to think I’m easy.”

He chuckled. “Too late.”

Music – Can It Convey Mood?

Please welcome my guest, author Kat Cantrell!

Thanks for having me here today Jeanne – I’m excited to talk to your readers about what I’ve been working on. I’m a top ten finalist in the Mills & Boon New Voices contest, which is pretty amazing considering there were over 800 entries. Thigh Noon is the story of a jilted entrepreneur whose ex holds her thigh-shaper product patent hostage in exchange for another shot at their relationship.

The hero, Jesse, is Black Irish, President and CEO of a company he built with his own two (clever, capable, and callused) hands and one sexy alpha male who will do anything to get what he wants. I’ve never written an alpha male before but I know what I like in one and infused as much of that into his character as I could. One thing I knew about him – he likes music. Loud, obnoxious, soulful, sensual; all different sorts. He’s also in the habit of wearing his concert T-shirts almost 100% of the time. That’s the benefit of owning your own company – you can wear whatever you want to work.

I hit upon the idea that the heroine, Alexia, gauges his moods based on what he’s listening to at the time. For example, in the first scene, he’s wearing a Metallica T-shirt because he knows she’s coming to confront him about stealing her patent. It’s going to be a knock-down, drag-out dirty fight. Metallica fits that mood perfectly. Many readers have commented how much they like that aspect of their relationship and its sparked some interesting debate.

So I started thinking. Can music really convey your mood to someone else? What if that person has a different emotion attached to a song, like because it was an ex’s favorite or it was playing during their first kiss? What if your mood changes during the song? Also, I’ve read some things the artists say about what inspired them to write particular songs and honestly, I didn’t see that feeling in the lyrics or the tone of the music. Sometimes, I think artists correctly leave songs open-ended for your own interpretation because at heart, music is a personal experience.

A lot of writers listen to music while writing and will switch up the sound based on the type of scene it is. Heavy guitars for fight scenes, soulful for the black moment, sensual for a love scene, and so on. To me, this is kind of the opposite idea – taking a mood and transferring it into your scene – and is loaded with the same potential for misfire. Do readers really get what you’re trying to do with the undertones of a scene?

I personally cannot write with music playing, but I recognize the value in it for some people. Regardless of which side you’re on, I want your opinion! Is it really possible to express mood through music and vice versa?

Thanks again for the opportunity to take over for a day Jeanne! Please vote for my entry in the New Voices contest. (requires easy and painless registration but I appreciate it!

About Kat: Kat Cantrell grew up enthralled with Star Wars, Buck Rogers and Starblazers, and read her first Harlequin in the third grade, which gave birth to a life-long obsession with the infinte beyond and eternal romance. What else would make sense but to combine the two? She suffers from genre ADD to this day and writes both contemporary and science fiction romance.

She majored in English literature, officially with the intent to teach but quickly realized the mistake when faced with twenty-five pairs of high-schooler's eyes. After twelve years buried in middle management at Corporate America, Inc., Kat began a new career aspiration: published romance author. And lived happily ever after in North Texas with a fantastic husband, two kids and no cubicle.

He had become a jealous asshole. He lowered himself to nothing more than a cave man anytime another man spoke, touched or even looked cross-eyed at Amanda.

This wasn’t him. He had never in his life been so possessive of a female. He was a catch. He knew that; his mother told him so.

Switching Genres: From Danger to Desire

Please welcome author Cherish D'Angelo during her Cherish the Romance Virtual Book Tour. And check out her giveway at the end of her post!

Switching Genres: From Danger to Desire

Thank you so much for hosting me here during my Cherish the Romance Virtual Book Tour, which launches my contemporary romantic suspense, Lancelot's Lady. I'm visiting today as Cherish D'Angelo, romance author, but I have a more dangerous side. I'm best known as suspense author Cheryl Kaye Tardif and I like to kill people off in my thrillers.

So why the switch? That's easy; I was presented with an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Romance is my second passion, next to suspense, and I've always known that sooner or later I'd venture into the land of sensuality and steam. When Textnovel announced they'd partnered with Dorchester Publishing to host the "Next Best Celler" romance writing contest, with the grand prize of a publishing contract with Dorchester, I knew I had to dive in head (and heart) first.

My first challenge was determining what to write. Then I recalled a manuscript I'd filed away, unfinished. My next challenge was to determine whether I'd use my regular writing name or a pen name. I decided to use Cherish D'Angelo. At least one of the posts during my tour tells you how I picked that name.

My greatest challenge was writing the novel. Though I had a good base already written, the original needed a lot of work. Posting it in 500-word scenes, helped me focus not only on the plot but on the sexual tension and the threat of danger, and that's where Lancelot's Lady really took off.

There is one major difference between writing suspense thrillers and a romantic suspense. In the former, plot and action drive the story. In the latter, the romantic journey drives the story.

There are similarities too. Characters in both genres need to be fully developed, with wants, needs, flaws, weaknesses, not to mention strengths. The suspense in each genre needs to keep readers turning the pages. My goal was to leave my readers wanting more by using "chapter hooks" at the end of nearly every 500-word scene.

Though officially Cheryl switched genres, from suspense thrillers to romance, Cherish couldn't help but add a strong element of suspense to Lancelot's Lady. It was easy. The character of Winston Chambers, a seedy and sadistic PI, created the tension necessary to pull off a romantic suspense.

What I've learned from switching genres is that I enjoy writing both suspense and romance. I've discovered that I don't like to put myself into a small box with a neat label. Even my thriller The River is a cross between sci-fi, supernatural, adventure and techno-thriller, with a dose of romance thrown in for good measure. I've learned that there is a fine line between danger and desire, and sometimes that line is blurred. I've also learned to listen to my inner muse. She always knows best what story I should write next.

Lancelot's Lady

A Bahamas holiday from dying billionaire JT Lance, a man with a dark secret, leads palliative nurse Rhianna McLeod to Jonathan, a man with his own troubled past, and Rhianna finds herself drawn to the handsome recluse, while unbeknownst to her, someone with a horrific plan is hunting her down.

Lancelot's Lady is available in ebook edition at KoboBooks, Amazon's Kindle Store, Smashwords and other ebook retailers. Help me celebrate by picking up a copy today and "Cherish the romance..."

Six Sentence Sunday

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday! This week I am posting a random six sentence portion of my work in progress "Brothers in Blue: Max." Ok... it's a few more sentences than six. But I'm sure you won't mind!

All of a sudden the kitchen lights seemed glaringly harsh to Amanda. She suddenly felt self-conscious. Well, she should. She was sitting buck-naked on the kitchen counter just having had wild sex with a cop.

Damn. She pushed herself off the smooth counter and gathered her clothes. She made a mental note to bleach the counter in the morning.

Hell, she should just have them replaced.
