Raven's Shelter, a new release by Dariel Raye

Please welcome my guest author Dariel Raye who has a novella in Taming of the Wolf (Volume 2), a Wild Rose Press release! ~~ Jeanne

Raven’s Shelter Blurb

Raven, a sentinel wolf shifter, is captured and locked in his wolf form until Karen, a veterinarian, tries to tame him and unleashes a 6'5" baby blue-eyed surprise.

Dr. Karen Marshall is a veterinarian with a calling – save as many stray animals as possible. The only child of wealthy, yet distant parents, she’s convinced that love is not for her. Until…

Raven’s search for his twin sister leads him to Karen. Born into a rare species of wolf shifters whose main purpose is protecting others, he has always been forced to fend for himself, but Karen’s loving, protective nature draws him – and not a moment too soon. Together, they must learn to trust each other enough to overcome a new, deadly enemy.

Here’s an excerpt…

Karen rubbed her patient’s head and removed her surgical gloves. Surgery had gone well and the freshly neutered dog was doing fine. Fia approached her as soon as she stepped into the hallway. Boss, there’s this gorgeous guy here to see you. He says he’s a vet, too. He was asking Auriel if he could look around the clinic.”

“Look around? Dammit, Ron must have sent him.” She stepped into another room, removed her scrubs, and washed her hands. “Where is he? Waiting room?”

“Yep. I must say all the female clients are enjoying the view.”

Karen frowned, genuinely puzzled. “What are you talking about?”

“The view! You know – good looking man – enjoying the view? Even the pets stopped whatever they were doing and looked at this guy when he walked in here.”

Karen shook her head. “Well, view or no view, he’d better not be one of Ron’s minions coming in here to piss me off or he’s gonna get cussed out today.”

“And that would make today different how?”

Karen gave Fia a no you didn’t look. “I don’t cuss every day.”

Fia laughed. “Ahem. Okay. You’re the boss, but I’ve never met another woman who can cry real tears over a dog or cat getting hurt or lost and turn around a minute later and cuss every human around her like a sailor. I’m just sayin’.”

Karen rolled her eyes and started walking back to the waiting area. “Where’s my guest?”

“Dr. Adler?” Fia called Raven to the front counter to meet Karen.

Karen stared as a tall man with wide shoulders and wavy black hair approached the counter. She knew her lips were parted, but couldn’t seem to force her jaw closed as she watched him in awe. He moved with the grace of a predator – slow, sensual movements as if his muscles rolled when he walked.

“Hi doctor.”

A few moments passed before Karen realized that Dr. Adler still held his hand out for her to shake. All suspicions about him working for Ron flew from her mind as her lower abdomen lit up like a furnace and her lower limbs melted from the heat. “Oh, hi doctor. You are from?” She tried to cover, something she seldom had to do. She was not a woman who spent much time thinking about men, let alone falling all over one. She was not accustomed to having to control her reactions.

“I’m from Washington State. I do apologize for keeping you from your patients, but I only…”

Karen found herself staring again, his words dropping to a low hum. His eyes were like water - liquid pools of baby blue in an olive-colored complexion framed by the blackest hair she had ever seen on a white man. He had high cheekbones, full lips, a straight nose, and as he spoke, she could see just a hint of pearl-white pointed incisors. The imperfection made his features perfect.

“Doctor Marshall? Are you alright?”

Karen noticed his entire expression becoming one of concern as the baby blue pools narrowed. She blinked slowly, realizing that he was awaiting a reply from her. She covered again. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t get much sleep last night. You were saying?”

“If I could bother you for just a few minutes longer in private.” He smiled.

Bother? His smile gave her an even better view of his imperfect yet perfect white teeth, and she felt as if a light switch had been turned on, causing the fire inside her to flare. “Oh, no bother.” She looked around the waiting room. “Five minutes?”

That smile again. “Five minutes.”

BLURB for BANGED UP:

Two scarred souls: one physically, one mentally. Both on the mend, hiding from their pasts…

Mace Walker can’t wait to get home.

Being buried deep undercover for the past two years, on the most complex case of his career, has torn him down physically and mentally. Now the FBI agent has come home to recover after having his leg badly injured from a gunshot wound. Arriving home late one night, his relief is short-lived as he’s faced with a stranger pointing a gun to his head, acting like he is the one who doesn’t belong there!

Colby Parks, a biochemist at the local university, had come to town a year earlier to escape an abusive relationship. She vows never to put herself in that situation again.

Then the perfect opportunity comes along: house-sitting for Mace’s sister while making the house she purchased habitable. But she couldn’t anticipate this big snag: the one wearing the tight Levi’s and worn leather jacket, looking like he had just escaped prison.

Being forced to share a house creates sparks between them in more ways than one. However, things take a turn when their pasts catch up to them, threatening to pull them apart forever.

GREAT REVIEWS for BANGED UP:

4 blue ribbons from Romance Junkies:
"Jeanne St. James has written an exceptional high action drama. From page one you will be captured by BANGED UP.The dialogue is superbly written and the plot allows you to be kept on the edge of your seat. For those seeking an action packed thriller, I highly recommend to add this title to your must read list."

4.5 hearts from The Romance Studio:
"Ms. Jeanne St. James has written a great book full of explicit sexuality and overloaded with suspense. There was more than one problem facing these main characters and St. James has integrated the storyline into love/hate/fear in such a way that it was impossible to put down. These two people were both full of past problems which continued to invade their presents and futures. Again, the author has presented the conflicts, as well as the sexual exploitations, in a great way.

There were other characters that made the story complete. They enhanced the plot and kept the story fast-paced and interesting. The actions, both sexual as well as the suspense-filled pursuits were fascinating. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart. I recommend that you read this book. You will enjoy it, I’m sure."
4 whips at Bella's Erotic Reviews:
"Jeanne St. James writes an exciting action packed romance drawing the reader in from page one and never letting go. I was hooked from the first page of this story. I loved Colby and her fierceness and how she overcame all that was done to her and of course Mace the brooding Alpha Male was a great character to. Even with all his macho pride he still had his doubts and insecurities. The bond that formed between these two was a beautiful thing to read. Both Mace and Colby must learn to trust each other before time runs out and it is to late. Full of action and hot romance Banged Up is a page-turner that is not to be missed."

13 THINGS NOT TO DO WHILE DRIVING:

13 THINGS NOT TO DO WHILE DRIVING:

As an emergency dispatcher, we have actually received complaints about other drivers doing the following. BTW, we really don’t care unless they are causing a problem.

1. Text/Twitter
2. Read the newspaper
3. Put on makeup
4. Masturbate
5. Surf the web
6. Drink a beer
7. Watch TV/Movie
8. Switch drivers
9. Stay left just because your GPS says so
10. Point a gun at another motorist
11. Do the hand motions to the "YMCA" (since you need at least 1 to drive)
12. Lean over the seat to smack the kid in the back or Nurse your child
13. Change clothes

And I know this is #14 but I just have to add this one: DO NOT give the Trooper who is passing you the finger. Yes, it happens.

Interview with Mace Walker, FBI Agent (the hero from BANGED UP)

1. Mace, what made you want to become an FBI agent?

I know this may sound corny, but I really wanted to fight crime. I considered becoming a police officer but love challenges and I knew it was a challenge to get into the FBI. I can't resist a challenge whether it has to do with my job… or getting the attention of an attractive female.

2. How long have you done it? Is it in your genes?

Right out of college. I obtained my B.S. in Criminal Justice with a minor in Spanish.

Since I speak Spanish it didn’t take much to learn Italian. I sort of look Italian so the agency thought I’d fit right in with the Mafia. Manni Spinozi is one of the worst mob bosses out there. After three years of being a junior agent, I went undercover to infiltrate the Spinozi family.

No, it’s not in my genes. My father was a college professor. No one that I know of in my family was in law enforcement.

3. Have you ever shot anyone?

Yes. I’ve shot several subjects. I’ve killed one out of self-defense. He was actually Spinozi’s brother. He shot me first when I was “made” by the family. Half of my thigh is gone. It’s an ugly injury and put me out of commission.

4. So you are out on disability right now? How do you like that forced vacation?

Yes. I am doing physical therapy, trying to redevelop the remaining muscle in my thigh. I walk with a slight limp when it is bothering me. I want to work my way back to full strength so I can get back to work.

I needed a break, so I’m not complaining too much. But I wish it was just a vacation and not a “recovery.” I was getting pretty worn out physically and mentally playing the role of a mob thug 24/7.

5. Are you glad to be home?

Yes, I was gone – deep undercover – for two years. So it’s nice to be back home, being myself and not having to act a part.

Though I came home to find a stranger in my house.

6. A stranger? Who was it?

Yes, I had no idea someone was living in my house besides my sister. It has made being home a little more interesting. And that’s putting it mildly.

You’ll have to read Banged Up, which is my story, to find out who she is.

7. Do you have any siblings?

Yes, one sister, Maxi. She was living in my house while I was away undercover. But I came home to find out she had married and went on an extended European honeymoon. Apparently, she let this stranger live in my house while she is gone.

8. How about love interests?

A man doesn’t kiss and tell. But if you really want to know, again, you’ll have to read Banged Up which is coming out in ebook on September 21st at Liquid Silver Books.

9. What do you think about a story that was written about you?

I found it interesting… I can’t complain about the steamy scenes and I really liked the ending.

Read more about Mace Walker in Banged Up by Jeanne St. James – available NOW at Liquid Silver Books (www.tinyurl.com/bangedup). You can read more about Banged Up, including an excerpt, at her website at www.jeannestjames.com.

Jeanne also has a m/m erotic novella, Rip Cord, releasing at Phaze 11/30 and a m/m/f interracial ménage a trois, Double Dare, releasing at Loose Id in January.

13 Things I did in St. Lucia while on my Sandals WeddingMoon:

Since I was away last week getting married, I didn’t have a lot of time to get together my Thursday 13, but here it is:

13 Things I did in St. Lucia while on my
 Sandals WeddingMoon:

1. Went snorkeling. I love to snorkel. I did get stung by a small jellyfish, but it was well worth it.

2. Drank drinks names “No Pressure,” “Rum Punch,” and “BBCs.” Not to mention 3 bottle of champagne and some other regular stand-bys. I did get to try Guiness for the first time. I think I’ll pass next time. Though I do love “Irish Car Bombs.”

3. Swam, floated for hours, and swam some more in the blue, warm, calm ocean waters. *sigh*

4. Burned, tanned, and burned again. Even though I slobbed on tons of sunscreen.

5. Got hitched in the heat and we sweated our asses off. But, again, worth it.

6. Took lots of photos. (We have over 600 to go through.)

7. Rode horses bareback in the ocean. What a great experience.

8. Hiked to the top of Pigeon Island.

9. Visited a “drive-thru” volcano. It stunk like sulfur.

10. Got a manicure/pedicure for the first time in my life!

11. Walked through a botanical garden and finally ended up at a waterfall.

12. Ate some great food, like lobster, shrimp, sushi, seafood pizza and calamari. (do you see a theme there?)

13. Went on a sunset cruise while wearing “Just Married” t-shirts (how hokey!).

Paranormal Romance, Hot Heroes & Magic

Welcome my guest author Aithne Jarretta! ~~Jeanne

In this blog post I’d like to focus on Meekal Chilkwell, the hero of CONCENTRIC CIRCLES.

Magic is in the blood. That’s how Meekal sees his destiny. But he isn’t the only person to think that way. Sometimes in life we lose the important people we love and who are meant to guide us.

Meekal lost his father when he was three years old.

The evil wizard who killed Jerome Black didn’t realize he opened the door to strengthen a future hero. Some things come back to haunt you.

Meekal comes from a long line of guardians responsible for protecting the Chalice Well in Glastonbury, England. Why is the Chalice Well important?

Because magic also flows from this ancient spring. It dwells within the earth and comes forth to give healing to the world’s inhabitants.

This is a good thing.

So … evil sorcerers are always trying to turn the tide of destiny. They have attempted to shift the balance of power for more than 1000 years.

Lucky for you they have failed.

Because magic flows in the blood. The bloodline must be preserved.
Evil has raised its ugly head once more. But don’t worry, Meekal is ready.

)O(

Writing paranormal romance can be so much fun. ;o) Believe me I only want to give my readers a chance to escape into worlds where the heroine is beautiful, but flawed. Then there’s the hero gifted with great strength but with his own issues that must be overcome to achieve a story’s happy ending.

Here’s an excerpt from CONCENTRIC CIRCLES which gives a little more insight into Meekal’s magical life. From chapter thirteen; Separate Ways, it is Meekal’s ‘black moment’ in the story.

)O(

Soulful eyes gazed at him. Meekal swallowed the lump in his throat along with his pride and raised a hand to wave.

Shayla tucked a loose strand of wayward hair behind her ear, smiled sadly and blew him a kiss. As though moving in slow motion, she turned and stepped through the door leading to the concourse and her flight back to the USA.

His heart contracted. The distance separating them grew. Stiffening in resolve, he left Bristol Airport, stepping into the night and got into his car. Although the Jaguar was a prized possession, he didn’t usually drive it. Somehow, in some manner, he had wanted Shayla’s departure to bear a fragment of normalcy.

He pressed the smart key button on the console, allowing the engine’s roar to calm his frazzled senses. Some classic rock-n-roll inserted into the player, he pulled out of the car park to the rhythm of Eden Mystic’s ‘Everywhere With You, Baby.’ Memory of Shayla’s glowing face at Harry’s Pub propelled his foot to the floor. The Jag shot out into traffic. He drove as if he were the only one on the road.

Heading north on A38, he wasn’t in the mood to drive south toward Glastonbury and home. Right now, the memories were too new, raw and debilitating. He knew his family would be worried.

His voice activated communication system remained connected at all times. “Chilkwell Manor,” he said and waited as the phone rang on the other end. “Hey, Mum.”

“Are you all right?”

He smiled, understanding the concern in her voice. “Aye. I’m not coming straight home.” He hesitated, gnawing on his lower lip. The action gave his heart a twist. Mirror, my love. He released his lip and a held breath. “Thought I’d go north. Well, it’s been awhile, you know.”

“That’s fine, dear. Just be careful.”

Silence came across the airwaves.

“Mum?”

“Call me when you get there?”

He stopped for a red light, staring at the glaring orb impeding his forward progress. “Aye,” he answered low-voiced. He gunned the car forward, the light changing with a blink of an eye. The night scenery flashed by him in patches of human existence. He ignored it all for the sake of driving fast along the northbound lane of A38.

An hour later, he zipped through the roundabout and slipped off A38 into the next exit to B4053, Victoria Street.

“Separate ways,” he muttered, spurring forward to a higher speed. “Put distance between us. Sort things out. Don’t you know your own heart, Kal?”
He ground his teeth and passed a slow moving Morris. The small auto blurred in his rearview mirror. He could travel the Semple Folk way and journey to his destination five hundred thirty-three miles in about eight and a half hours.

Instead, he used a tricky charm, passing everyone so he could arrive in half the time. “Adaptive cruise control tweaked with a little Fae based magic.”

“Okay, so magic is kewl. Life is too short to do without.” He pushed the button to roll the windows down, allowing the cool night air to bustle through the Jaguar’s interior. Having the auto persona of a black cat around him suited him to a T.

Blackpool, Gloucester and the Kincardine Bridge at Glasgow were all a blur. He slowed down and paid the road toll at Erskine.

Thoughts about the last few days banged around in his head like a hyperactive fidget. He laughed roughly at that realization. “Mental,” he grumbled. “Maybe that’s what it takes to put down Syther’s evil plot. Hyper insanity.” He pressed the accelerator roughly and angled into a sharp turn. “Meet wickedness with a headstrong highlander charge. To hell with this!”

He slammed on the brakes and pulled into a roadside car park, squealing the tires. A tree loomed grotesquely, bare limbs swaying in the night air. His breath came fast as he stared at the tree’s broad trunk only inches from his car bumper. “Bloody hell, you’re radgie, Meekal.”

He shoved the door open and stepped out. The empty car park, wind whistling through bare branches and moon glow, all combined to squeeze him in insurmountable loneliness. He kicked the curb. “Dammit!”

The echo, pounding his ears, multiplied heart-splitting anguish. Angry about his inability to push desolation aside, he reached between the driver’s seat and boot, grabbed his coat and yanked it on. He closed the door gently, refusing to take his rage out on his car. Passing his palm over the warm front hood, he murmured, “Miniature.”

The Jaguar XK morphed into a pocket sized black ebony beauty. He bent, picked her up, and placed it protectively in his inner coat pocket.

A truck rumbled past, the only other night traveler. Meekal glanced at his watch. “Three twenty-three a.m.” He sighed. “Must’ve been driving slower than I thought.” He closed his eyes against the empty countryside and spun on his heel, arriving in Fiunary Forest on a chilled wind. He stumbled slightly when his shoe bumped a tree root.

Tucked up in the northern reaches of the Fiunary Forest, Raven’s Gate remained hidden centuries after it had been deserted. He stared at the twin megaliths guarding the sequestered lands of his ancestors.

Cell phone in hand, he dialed. The line buzzed with residual magic projected from the towering stones. He clasped the device and faced south, hoping for a clearer connection.
“Meekal?”

Thank you for reading. ;o)
